Registration of New Students

Selected candidates are required to register for the degree programme. At the registration a candidate should pay registration fee, the whole or a part (minimum 25%) of the academic fee, library fee, student society fee and any other fees as applicable. The initial registration is valid only for one year and should be renewed by the student annually by paying registration renewal fee until all requirements of the degree are completed. A selected candidate may be registered as a regular student, provisional student, casual student or an exchange student.

Type of Registration

A selected candidate may be registered as a regular student (full-time/ part-time), provisional student, casual student or an exchange student.

A regular full-time postgraduate student is a person who, having satisfied the appropriate admission requirements, has been admitted and registered by the PGIHS to follow a postgraduate programme on a full-time basis. A full-time student carries out coursework and/or research during normal working hours of the week and is not engaged in employment or any other income generating work other than working as a teaching assistant or a research assistant at the University.

A regular part-time postgraduate student is a person who, having satisfied the appropriate admission requirements, has been admitted and registered by the PGIHS to follow a postgraduate programme on a part-time basis. A part-time student shall devote only a part of his/her time to the coursework and the research during normal working hours of the week and may engage in employment or any other income generating work. The relevant minimum and maximum durations for all programmes on part-time basis shall be one and a half times those of the corresponding regular full-time programmes.

A candidate whose academic performance cannot be fully evaluated due to unavailability of final certificates at the time of admission may be registered as a provisional student. The provisional student status should be converted to regular registration within a period of 3 months from the date of provisional registration. A provisional student is not allowed to sit the final examination of the semester.

An exchange student of the PGIHS is a person (local/foreign) who is registered for a degree programme at another university/ Higher Educational Institute and who has obtained written permission from that university/Institute to follow courses or undertake research at the PGIHS on credit transfer basis.

A casual student of the PGIHS is a person (local/foreign) who is registered to follow a course/ courses or engage in research under supervision on non-credit transfer basis. Such student receives a certificate for his/her engagement at the PGIHS on successful completion.

Date of Registration

The date of registration of a student following a taught programme is the date of the commencement of the academic semester. The date of registration of student following a research degree such MPhil or PhD is the date of the acceptance of his/her application for the degree programme by the Board of Study.

Concurrent Registration

Students are not allowed to register concurrently for a Bachelor’s degree at the University or any other HEI and a postgraduate degree or diploma at the Institute or two postgraduate taught courses at the Institute or one at the Institute and another at any other HEI. A full-time research degree student of the Institute/ any other HEI shall, however, register concurrently for a taught postgraduate programme of the Institute on part-time basis. Subject to the exemption given above, if found guilty for concurrent registration, the candidature at the Institute shall be terminated immediately.
